Chester Scott

Chesapeake Retriever, 6 years old
This is Chester, a six year old Chesapeake Retriever. In July 2007 we noticed a knot on his right front leg. I took him to the vet. She thought it might be cancer and did a biopsy. Four days later she called with the bad news that he did have cancer, sarcoma. She wasn’t sure what kind, but recommended we see an orthopedic surgeon. He recommended we take his whole leg off up to his shoulder. Of course, we were very upset. He said his leg would break from the cancer if we didn’t take it off. The next week Chester had his operation and did very well considering his situation. He could walk on three legs almost immediately. After the second biopsy from the leg removal, we learned he had osteosarcoma, which is the worst kind of bone cancer.
After recovering from the surgery, our vet recommended we take him to an oncologist. The closest one was in Fairfax, Virginia. We went two weeks after his surgery and started the chemo. He now takes chemo every three weeks for 15 weeks. He is doing great. He loves to swim with 3 legs just as much as he did with 4 and takes walks just like he used to.
We hope to have Chester with us for a lot longer than we would have had we not done the surgery and the chemo.
